Shrubb "The Little Wonder" › April 1909 MarathonThank you my friend Wayne. It was great to meet you at the Scotiabank Marathon..What a coincidence that you had this Fantastic Marathon picture..
This photo shows the lineup of “The Great Marathon Derby,” the first outdoor followup marathon to the 1908 Olympic Race. From the left, the competitors in this race were: England’s Alf Shrubb; Italy’s Dorando Pietri, disqualified in the Olympic race; Frenchman Henri St. Yves, Canadian Tom Longboat, American Olympic gold medalist Johnny Hayes, and Irishman Matthew Maloney. St. Yves would win this event, held at the Polo Grounds in New York. It followed a string of indoor head-to-head match races at the marathon distance. These professional races continued regularly until the beginning of World War I.
